Description:

Solid and in very good original condition. Top of back is 38.75" high. The seat is 14.5" high, 18.5" wide and 16" deep. Unusual design, with folding mechanism. Solid and in very good condition. Owner provided us with the following additional information: “This charming antique folding quilting chair is in very good condition for its age. I believe it is made from mahogany. The top of the chair has been carved with a spindle design. There are a very few minor nicks and/or scratches in the wood owing to its use, but they in no way detract from the chair's craftsmanship. The front of the chair is beautifully upholstered in its original rustic burgundy velvet. The upholstery is in excellent condition, showing no little wear and no spots, stains. What sets this chair apart is that it collapses, or folds for transport. In the late 1800s, folding chairs had become very popular as the women who would sit in them used them to come together and hold a quilting party where each member of the sewing circle contributed to the overall quilt or design of the handcrafted linen while exchanging news and some dare say quite a bit of gossip… hence the term “sewing circle”. These folded sewing chairs, sometimes referred to as a collapsible quilting chair, made it easier for the many who traveled cross country with their furniture tied to the outside of their wagons  where space was at a premium. I am not able to find a label or manufacturer's mark on the chair, but due to its age, construction, and previous ownership, I know the chair to be an antique. It has lived in our family for over 65 years in a temperature controlled home, away from the family demands of daily living. There is no question that the materials and craftsmanship are of the finest quality. A wonderful example of vintage Americana, this collapsible chair, or folding sewing chair, will complement just about any decor, but really highlights the shabby chic or country motif. It is not only very functional, but also very comfortable and supportive to one’s back.”
